POLICE are investigating an alleged assault on a woman in Darlington town centre.

An area close to Argos, on Skinnergate, is currently cordoned off as officers work to secure the scene ahead of further investigations.

The alleged assault is believed to have taken place around midnight on Friday, July 15.

At this stage of the investigation, police cannot reveal the nature of the assault.

Duty Inspector Kevin McCarthy said: "We are investigating an incident following a report of a female being assaulted.

"We are currently trying to establish the full sequence of events and have preserved the scene pending forensic examination.

"Because we are still investigating, it is difficult to disclose further information at this stage."

Rumours of a body being found in the area are untrue, according to DI McCarthy.
