SPECIALLY trained detectives will work together to tackle cyber crime in County Durham.

The Digital Intelligence and Investigation Team, based at Chester-le-Street, has been set up in response to the emerging threat of computer crime, digital threats and online fraud.

It will investigate digital crimes, gather intelligence and work to stay up to date with the latest threats, viruses and scams.

Information will be shared with the public in a bid to ensure they do not become the next victims of online fraudsters.

The team, set up by Durham Constabulary, comprises of detectives and police staff headed by a detective inspector and overseen by DCI Gavin Heckles.

On Wednesday, July 20, their representatives and the Safe Durham Partnership will hold an event in Durham to mark the launch of the new unit.

Detectives will be on hand to give advice while visitors can enjoy a number of activities, including a treasure hunt and the opportunity to meet police dogs and the interceptors.

DCI Heckles said: “We have always had a cybercrime team within the wider CID function but the emerging crime patterns and trends over recent months have pointed towards a substantial growth in this type of offence.

“Working with agencies from The Safe Durham Partnership we will educate not only the public but the business community too.”

The Get Safe Online in Durham event will be held in the market place and town hall from 10am until 5pm.
