A PROMINENT character in North-East amateur dramatics circles is facing jail after admitting a string of child sex offences.

Morris McShane, 54, of Ambleside Avenue, in Seaham, County Durham, will be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on March 21.

He was due to go on trial on Monday but admitted offences against two teenage girls after several hours of legal discussions.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton, QC, adjourned the case for a background report, but told McShane custody will be considered.

McShane - who the court heard has no previous convictions - has been involved in amateur dramatics for more than 20 years.

He has been in productions with Vane Tempest Theatre Group, in Seaham, Murton Theatre Group, St Andrew’s Operatic Society, in Roker, Sunderland, and South Shields Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

His barrister, Paul Currer, said he had a partner, who is thought to have accompanied him in court, and a son.

McShane was granted bail after admitting five charges of sexual activity with a child and two of sexual assault.
