A WOMAN has been sexually assaulted in York.
North Yorkshire Police said they were called to the Hungate area of York where a woman was allegedly attacked in the early hours of this morning.
A spokesman said the woman was believed to have suffered a serious sexual assault.
Police officers remain at the scene, where a cordon has been in place around the York St John University student flats in Carmelite Street since before 7am. Forensic officers were seen leaving the scene just after 10.30am.
Hungate, Dundas Street, Palmer Lane and Carmelite Street remain closed to traffic as part of the investigation. Stonebow and Garden Place remain open.
A spokeswoman for the university said: "The university is aware that in the early hours of 14 September the police and ambulance service were called to an incident in the Carmelite Street area of the city.
"The university is supporting the police with their investigation and has no further comment at this time."
Witnesses or anyone with information that could assist the investigation should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for the York Serious Crime Team.
