POLICE are investigating after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in Newton Aycliffe on Monday night.

The incident took place in the Woodham Burn area of Newton Aycliffe at 8.45pm.

Police said the boy received a stab wound on a grassed track just off Stephenson Way, close to the burn, and was taken by ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

A spokesperson for Durham Police today described his condition as stable.

His injury is not believed to be life-threatening and his family has been informed.

A 15-year-old local boy was arrested at the scene and is tonight in custody at Bishop Auckland police station after being questioned about the stabbing.

Police said the incident was witnessed by a number of people at the scene and enquiries are ongoing.

Newton Aycliffe town councillor, John Clare described the incident as “shocking”.

He added: “It’s a tragedy for all concerned. We are all particularly worried for the alleged victim.

“Thankfully, the presence of witnesses at the scene should lead to this matter being sorted out quickly.

"Our thoughts are with the boys’ families at this time.”

Although there were witnesses to the attack, Durham Police is still appealing for anyone with any further information to contact the force on the non-emergency number, 101.
