A MAN has been charged with manslaughter after an assault victim died in hospital.

Mohamed Rashwan, who is also known as Ali Mazin Mahmod, died in hospital on Sunday morning, eight days after he was attacked outside the former Go North East bus depot, on Sunderland Road, in Wardley, Gateshead.

Mr Rashwan, who was 42, suffered massive head injuries in the assault on Saturday, May 2 and was found by a passer-by lying on the ground semi-conscious shortly before 3pm.

He was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle but never recovered.

It is understood he underwent a liver transplant last year.

Gary Pitt, 22, of, Falstone, Leam Lane, has been charged with manslaughter and is due to appear at Gateshead Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning.

A 26-year-old man has been released with no further action.

Acting Detective Inspector Neil Wynd, from Northumbria Police’s major crime team, has appealed for witnesses to come forward, saying the incident happened in the early afternoon when many people may have been going about their daily business.

There have also been extra police patrols in the area in an effort reassure residents.

Police have now renewed their appeal for information. Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101, extension 69161, quoting log number 729 02/04/15, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.

Mr Rashwan is said to have had a wife and two children in Egypt.

He left his home country for the North-East several years ago to find work and support his family, becoming a popular member of the community and a well-known face at his local mosque.

An online giving page has been set up to raise money to help Mr Rashwan’s family.

A statement on the GoFundMe site said: "I am sad to say that Ali has passed away this morning. He was with no friends and family. He died alone apart from the nurse who held is hand whilst he died."
