David Magee was last seen in Hartlepool today.
"Officers would like help to trace David Magee, 28, who has absconded from Kirklevington Prison whilst on day release today," said a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police.
"He was last seen at a shop on Catcote Road in Hartlepool at around 4.05pm and was wearing a blue striped t-shirt, bright blue tracksuit bottoms and trainers.
"He is currently serving a sentence for section 18 wounding with intent following an incident outside the Force area."
