HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned that insecure properties are being targeted by burglars in the winter months as well as the summer months.

Cleveland Police are reminding members of the public that although insecure burglaries are traditionally prominent during summer, they also take place in winter and are encouraging people not to leave their windows and doors open.

Detective Inspector Glen Westmoreland said: “Whilst burglary remains a priority for the Force, members of the public are encouraged to take steps to help themselves from becoming a victim.

“An insecure property provides the ideal environment for an opportunist criminal and something as simple as locking your windows and doors, even when you’re at home, can prevent it from happening.

“Burglary is a very intrusive crime and it often makes victims feel vulnerable in their own home. We run regular campaigns and initiatives throughout the year to raise awareness and offer advice to householders, students and businesses among others.

“Whilst we will always do all that we possibly can to prevent and detect burglaries, we would encourage members of the public to also do all that they can to avoid becoming a victim.”

Crime prevention advice includes not advertising on social media when you are going on holiday, making your home appear inhabited even when it may not be, fitting burglar alarms and installing security lighting, using timer switches and locking garages and sheds.
