A WOMAN was raped after being forced to the ground.

The incident happened in Whitley Bay .

Police were made aware of the incident at 10.20am this morning.

It is believed to have happened in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, where the woman was approached in the Cambridge Avenue and Oxford Street area. She was then forced to the ground and raped.

The man is described as being in his 30s, stocky build, over 6ft tall, bald head with a little bit of hair and dark eyes. He is believed to have been wearing a grey-white shirt.

Supt Richie Jackson said: "We are currently investigating this incident and providing the victim with specialist support. We appeal for anyone who may have been in the area at the time or has any information to contact police.

"We do have extra officers on patrol in the area carrying out enquiries and providing reassurance."
