TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following a three car collision last night.

Durham Police is appealing for witnesses to the incident which occurred just north of the Cock of the North roundabout on the A167, near Durham.

At about 7.50pm, the three cars, a VW Golf, a Vauxhall Astra and a Vauxhall Corsa were all travelling north on the A167 when the VW Golf left the carriageway and collided with a tree.

The driver of the VW Golf, a 21 year old man from Ferryhill, was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.

The drivers of the two other vehicles, an 18-year-old man from Bishop Auckland and a 41-year-old man from West Auckland, were arrested at the scene for dangerous driving. Neither of the men were injured but both of their cars were damaged and recovered from the scene.

The road was closed to allow for collision investigation from 8pm until 12:30am this morning.

Sergeant Lee Morris, from the roads policing unit at Durham Police, said “I would urge anyone who may have seen any of the cars heading north on the A167 at around 7.45pm last night to get in touch.

“One man has been seriously injured in the collision and I am keen to establish the circumstances leading up to it.”

Witnesses should call Durham Police on 101.
