POLICE are cracking down on opportunist burglars.

Northumbria Police’s Operation Soundwave is continuing to tackle burglary across the force area.

Since April 1, there have been 865 burglaries, down 28 per cent (342) on the same period last year.

Chief Inspector Peter Bent said: “We continue to put people behind bars for burglary, taking those involved in such offences off the streets.

“Dealing with those involved plays a key part in preventing burglaries from happening in the first place but it’s just as important residents take crime prevention steps to protect their property.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird added: “It’s important that we tackle burglaries and I know Northumbria Police is taking a strong stance in ensuring those who commit burglaries are caught.

“This should help to reassure residents that police are taking action to drive down crime and tackle these matters.”
