A MAN has been jailed for 15 months after he broke into a supermarket store just two days after being given a suspended prison sentence for a hammer attack.

Kai David Anderson used a large rock and a shopping trolley to smash his way into the Asda store, in Portrack Lane, Stockton, after he gained entry to a foyer area.

Prosecutor Sue Jacobs told Teesside Crown Court that the 35-year-old created a hole in a glass window just large enough to crawl through.

However he had only been in the store a matter of minutes before police arrived and arrested him.

The defendant, of Outram Street, Middlesbrough, who admitted burglary on July 6 this year, did not have chance to steal anything, although a number of cakes which were on display had to be destroyed after they were left smeared with his blood.

Two days before the burglary Anderson had been given a 12 month jail sentence at Teesside Crown Court, suspended for two years, after smashing down the front door of a house in Leven Street, Middlesbrough, and attacking a man with a hammer and making threats towards him.

Anderson’s barrister Nicholas Peacock branded his offending “pathetic” and said a jail sentence would not solve his problems with drink.

A judge had previously said his drinking prior to the hammer incident was “off the Richter scale”, while Anderson told police he was too drunk to remember what he did for the burglary.

The Recorder of Middlesbrough, Judge Simon Bourne-Arton said Anderson had spent the best part of his life committing criminal offences.

He said: “The real aggravating feature is that you just don’t stop and there comes a time when the courts have to lock you up.”

Recorder Bourne-Arton activated the suspended 12 month jail sentence and gave Anderson three months for the burglary.
