CONSERVATIVES gained a council seat at a local by-election, following five losses in last week's polls.

The Tory gain came at Redcar & Cleveland Council in a contest in Longbeck ward following the resignation of an independent councillor.
Voting was: C 494, LD 397, Lab 337, Ind 282. The turnout was 28%.
