THE Labour group of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have confirmed they will be bidding for power at the authority's annual general meeting on Thursday (May 28).
Group leader Sue Jeffrey plans to announce the leadership team she hopes will run the council after narrowly missing out on an overall majority in this months elections.
They secured 29 out of the 59 seats up for grabs and missed a 30th seat by three votes following four ballot counts.
Councillor Sue Jeffrey said "Labour with 29 seats, is easily the largest political group on the council, and received the biggest overall vote in the recent borough elections. On that basis we will be bidding for control of the council on Thursday.
"I am also taking the earliest possible opportunity to put into action our election commitment to conduct business in an accountable and open way.
"We believe Labour will be putting together a team made up of both experienced councillors and knowledgeable and enthusiastic new members, and by offering the vital Scrutiny function to the opposition, show we are acting in an open and transparent fashion."
