MIDDLESBROUGH Council have given residents an insight into how it prepares for winter snow storms like we have had recently.

The short film shows transport, environment and Streetscene teams as they swing into action, responding to regular weather updates.

Thousands of tonnes of road salt are stored at the Council’s Cargo Fleet Depot, with further stocks be available from Boulby if required.

The fleet of seven gritters – alongside a mini gritter and three quad bikes - are a familiar sight on the town’s five Priority Routes, keeping traffic flowing and helping to ease congestion during morning and evening rush hour periods.

Salt bins are deployed to ensure major routes are kept clear, while extra work is undertaken to ensure town centre roads and pavements remain safe and passable.

Councillor Tracy Harvey, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “Every year we make sure we’re as prepared as we can be for whatever the winter weather has in store for us.

“The weather over the last week has been almost unprecedented in recent memory, but our teams deserve enormous credit for the fantastic work they do in some very challenging conditions.

“They have the equipment, expertise and experience they need to keep our major routes clear and their tireless work ensures the town centre remains open for residents, businesses and visitors, whatever the weather.”
