A DISTRICT authority will vote on raising its council tax by £5 for a band D property for 2017 to 2018.

Hambleton District Council's cabinet will vote on the changes at its meeting on Tuesday, February 7, and if approved the increase will be the second the authority has levied in five years after the Government stopped offering its council tax freeze grant for 2016 to 2017. Its recommendations will later be debated by the full council.

A budget consultation was carried out between September and October among residents and businesses in the district, which asked respondents how the council should balance the budget.

The council said the most popular response was an increase in council tax or in fees and charges, and it was clear respondents were against providing fewer services.

In a report published ahead of the meeting, the council said it continues to be "committed to providing good services to its residents and continues to have the third lowest council tax in the country" therefore is to recommend members vote to increase the council tax.
