A NEW footpath will provide an alternative to a popular yet flood damaged route.

The 200 metre stretch of riverbank path at Holebeck between Wolsingham and Frosterley has been subject to years of erosion, with Storm Desmond in December 2015 proving the final straw.

It led to walkers travelling along a narrow strip between the River Wear and Weardale Railway. Some even walked along the live railway, prompting Durham County Council to join forces with Weardale Railway, which allowed the path to be built on its land.

Councillor Carl Marshall, Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “The footpath is one of Weardale’s busiest, being a fairly level route along the valley, and is popular with both locals and visitors alike.”
