TEACHING assistants are gathering in Durham City this weekend to raise awareness of their campaign to safeguard their salaries.

They are locked in dispute with Durham County Council over their contracts and will be on Framwellgate Bridge on Saturday from 11am to 1pm.

An online fund set to support the campaign, which could end up in court, has past the £30,000 mark.

The target is £35,000 and may be used to fund a barrister for a legal challenge against the council.

About 2,700 staff will be affected by the changes to pay teaching assistants term time only rather than the current 52 weeks a year.

They claim the move will slash their salary by almost a quarter.
