YOUNGSTERS will be steered away from risk and taught to build a better community with the launch of a new initiative.
The Junior ED (Education and Diversion) programme is led by Durham Constabulary and designed to prevent young people committing crimes in later life.
The eight-week scheme aims to teach its members how to identify risks, respect themselves and each other and develop an awareness of safety, rights and responsibility.
Organisers will help children to build resilience and encourage them to safeguard themselves and others.
The programme was designed as a form of early intervention, in a bid to prevent harm to young people and reduce the risk of future offending.
Durham Constabulary and partners including Durham and Darlington’s councils, the fire service and the British Red Cross, will also work in schools as part of the programme.
Representatives will contribute to PSHE lessons covering topics including substance misuse, road safety and the consequences of criminal activities.
Anyone interested in contributing to the scheme should email hq.partnershipsoffice@durham.pnn.police.uk.
