A COUNCIL has been thanked for supporting servicemen and women past and present.
Durham County Council received a silver award in the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
The council signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in 2012 and has set up an armed forces forum to promote the help and support available to forces personnel.
It is also supporting reservist staff, giving them up to ten days of special paid leave for training.
Councillor Lucy Hovvels, the council’s armed forces champion, said: “Durham County Council is committed to ensuring veterans and serving members of the armed forces and their families have access to the help and support they need.
“We are honoured that our efforts in this area have been recognised by the Ministry of Defence.”
