CANVASSERS working to update the electoral register are visiting homes across County Durham.

Durham County Council is in the final phase of its annual review of the register which involves visiting all properties which have not responded to written requests to update their details.

The authority wants residents do respond even if information contained on the register has not changed so they can be included on the 2016 electoral register.

People not listed on the register will not be able to vote in local and national elections including the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May 2016 and the referendum on membership of the European Union, which is expected to take place before the end of 2017.

Being registered to vote can also improve a person's credit rating.

Canvassers, who wear ID badges that are visible at all times, can help members of the public complete their registration forms.
