GOOD-hearted volunteers from a variety of backgrounds were thanked for their efforts in a cathedral service.

Durham County Council chairman John Robinson invited members of various voluntary and uniformed groups to Durham Cathedral for the service on Sunday (May 17).

Cllr Robinson bestowed the Chairman’s Medal on the Salvation Army, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

He said: “It’s important to give thanks for the countless hours of service given to the communities of County Durham and the wider North-East.

“Many volunteers have dedicated their lives to their chosen services and as a local councillor I see every day how our communities have benefitted.

“Whether it’s ensuring that people remain safe and are looked after, protecting our environment, ensuring the welfare of animals or stepping in to deal with incidents and emergencies, these people are the safety net which makes Durham such a wonderful place to live and underpins our reputation as an altogether better and caring county.”

The service was one of Cllr Robinson’s final acts as council chairman before he steps down tomorrow (Wednesday, May 19).
