COUNCIL computers should block access to websites glorifying self-harm, a report says.
The recommendation is contained in a report on self-harm among children and young people from Durham County Council’s Children and Young People’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
The study also suggests computers in council-run buildings such as libraries should block access to social chat websites focused on self-harm.
Councillor Jan Blakey, the committee chair, said self-harm figures were limited to those attending hospital.
But her committee also recommended further work with parents, schools, governors and youth workers to tackle the problem.
The council’s cabinet is required to respond to the report within six months.
Cabinet member Neil Foster said: "No child comes with a manual. You don't know how they're going to react.
"One of the saddest things to hear is 'if only I'd known what they were thinking'. This report provides a roadway forward."
