DOG owners who allow their pets to foul on playing fields have been shown the red card in a four-week clampdown.

Durham County Council, Durham County FA and Durham City FC were involved in the campaign, which saw 400 incidents reported and nearly 200 people sign up for a responsible behaviour scheme.

Around 4,500 children attended lessons or assemblies on responsible dog ownership and 272 dogs were implanted with free microchips.

Neighbourhood wardens issued eight £80 fixed penalty notices to pet owners failing to clear up their animal’s mess.

Pauline Walker, a senior civic pride officer at the council, said: “Dog fouling on playing fields and sports pitches is extremely unpleasant as well as a serious environmental and safety issue. We know it is a particular concern for local residents.

“The vast majority of dog owners are responsible and do clean up after their pets but unfortunately there are still those who fail to do so. Through this campaign we made it clear that this will not be tolerated.”
