PRIMARY schools in Stockton and state schools in Durham, Harrogate and York have fared well in the top of the Sunday Times 101 Best Places to Live.

They were praised in the second part of the newspaper’s supplement which ranks the best places to live in the country.

The guide used data from Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide, to reveal the top places to live to be near the best primary and state schools.

The supplement heaps praise on Bristol, which was crowned best city, thanks to ''one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, varied and beautiful housing stock, decent schools, buzzy culture and night life and access to some fantastic countryside''.

Stockton was named in the top ten best places to live for primary schools while Durham, Harrogate and York were all in the top ten for state schools.

The supplement named Skipton, North Yorkshire, as the number one, praising its ideal combination of low crime rates, ''top class'' schools, great transport links, a ''buzzing'' high street dominated by independent shops, pretty and reasonably priced property, and beautiful surrounding countryside.
