A SERVICE of thanksgiving has been held for the Olympic and Paralympic torchbearers of County Durham over the weekend.
Chairman of Durham County Council, Linda Marshall, handed out commemorative certificates to those who took part in the build up to the summer games.
It was held at Durham Cathedral on Saturday and led by the Dean of Durham, the Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove.
He said: “We have come together as the people of County Durham in this our great cathedral church to celebrate the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games; to rejoice in the commitment, sportsmanship and achievements of our athletes and sportswomen and men; to recall the Olympic Torch Relay through our County and the joy and celebration that it brought; to give thanks for all volunteers, Games Makers and stewards; and to pray that the legacy of the Games may ‘Inspire a Generation’ for the strengthening of our community life.”
After the service there was a collection to raise money for the ministry of the cathedral, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and The Royal British Legion.
