A COUNCILLOR is appealing for help in ensuring his village thrives for generations to come.

Cllr Gerald Lee made an impassioned plea to fellow Heighington residents in his regular newsletter.

He hopes to foster and strengthen community spirit around the village by encouraging people to join committees and support Heighington’s groups and events.

Cllr Lee highlighted the “spectacular success” of a recent event which saw villagers turn out to support cancer-stricken teenager Kieran Maxwell at a huge carol concert.

He said: “Kieran’s event was a brilliant example of how we can come together for a common cause.

“Those of us who have been around for some time would say that community involvement is less now than in the past.

“It is of concern to many that people seem not to support the businesses and community groups that are run by a handful of residents for the good and enjoyment of others.”

Cllr Lee is appealing for ideas in a bid to encourage people to join in with village activities and to help maintain communal buildings, such as St Michael’s Church and the village hall.

He said: “Most people expect the village hall to be there for them to use as and when needed or our church to be available for a Christening, wedding or funeral.

“But how many think about the cost in time, effort and money put in by volunteers to keep these two important buildings open?”

Cllr Lee is encouraging people to suggest ways in which to support the community. Email any ideas to gerald.lee@darlington.gov.uk.
