DARLINGTON’S MP said she would be happy to hear residents’ concerns about a contentious hockey pitch proposal, but wants the facility built ‘as soon as possible’.

As previously reported in The Northern Echo, the plan to create a 101.4m long by 63m wide synthetic pitch with associated fencing and lighting has provoked controversy among many nearby residents worried about the impact it will have on their lives.

Darlington MP Jenny Chapman supports the proposal made by Carmel College, but said she would be interested to hear from residents who fear the pitch will have an adverse effect on their neighbourhood.

She said: “It is a good thing that Carmel is investing in facilities for the young, we have got a real problem with a lack of physical activity and hockey is a sport that has got a growing following.

“The British women’s team has just won gold at the Olympics and that has inspired young people to take up hockey and it would be very good to have a facility like this that is open to the public in Darlington.

“I am really happy to go and speak with residents and meet with them on site and speak to the school, but I think we need to find a way to get this pitch constructed and available as soon as possible.”

The proposal, which has attracted more than 100 objections, is currently being assessed by a government department after Darlington Council’s planning committee said they were minded to recommend it.

The main concerns from objectors include noise and traffic generated by the facility, particularly if the evening opening hours are allowed.
