VOLUNTEERS are being asked to come forward for an annual litter campaign.

The sixth annual Big Spring Clean is expect to see thousands of volunteers taking part in litter picks to rid their streets of rubbish.

LitterFree Durham, Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council are teaming up for the campaign which runs from February 29 to April 17.

Last year, nearly 2000 volunteers took part in 175 litter picks across the area, collecting more than 2000 bags of rubbish.

Cllr Brian Stephens, of Durham County Council, said: “This is a great opportunity to make a real difference to where you live and we would urge everyone to give up some of your time, whatever you can spare, and take part.

“Although most people get rid of their rubbish properly we work hard to educate the minority who leave their litter lying around”.

Anyone wishing to take part in the campaign will be supplied with equipment and support and arrangements will be made to remove all the bags of rubbish.

To take part in a litter pick in County Durham call 03000 261 000 or in Darlington call 01325 406 648.
