BUDGET cuts have led a council to begin charging for the treatment of rodents.

Darlington Borough Council has introduced a £10 charge for the treatment of rats and mice in domestic properties in the authority area.

The service was previously free and the charge is being introduced to contribute towards the cost.

The treatment of insects will remain at £70.20.

Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “The current budget conditions have led to our decision to charge for the eradication of rodents. £10 still represents very good value for dealing with this problem, and of course the public are welcome to use other contractors.”

Under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act, occupiers and owners of land and property have a duty to eradicate rats, and can use either a contractor or the authority to deal with the problem.

This charge will not apply to council tenants as pest control is included in their rent.

The council does not carry out pest control treatment work in businesses premises and any requests for treatment should be directed at commercial pest control contractors.
