A TARGET to knit 1,100 poppies to commemorate the men from Darlington who died during the First World War has been reached.
Groups and individuals from across the town got on board the project and Councillor Nick Wallis, cabinet member for leisure and local environment, said he was delighted with the response.
He said: “Staff at the libraries have been staggered at the response to our request for people to create the poppies.
“It has been a joy to see so many beautiful creations flood in.
“Together they promise to make a striking display, commemorating the brave men from Darlington who lost their lives for their country during the First World War.
“Thank you to everyone who knitted, crocheted or made a poppy from felt.
“Your patience, and kindness are very much appreciated.”
Residents will get a chance to view the poppies later in the year when they go on display at Crown Street Library.
Details will be announced at a later date.
