EVERY town needs good leisure facilities because of the immeasurable impact exercise has on both health and anti-social behaviour.

And Darlington Borough Council is an example of a North-East local authority which has invested heavily in leisure and is to be congratulated on the first-class job it has made of upgrading the Dolphin Centre.

There have been inevitable frustrations for customers and staff while work has been carried out on the £5m facelift, but it has been well worth waiting for.

Darlington is a town in transition and change doesn't come easily. We have seen that during the Pedestrian Heart scheme, which has had its well-publicised problems.

While not underestimating the ongoing challenges the development has posed for local traders, we look forward to the day when the work is finished and Darlington can compete regionally as a shopping destination with something different to offer.

For now, the town can take pride in having a leisure centre with a stylish, modern look, excellent facilities and a high standard of catering.

We hope other local authorities will take note and, since it is nearly Christmas, our toast is simple: Good health.

Joshua's message

THE family of Joshua Ridley might easily have been facing a heartbreaking Christmas this year.

Seven-year-old Joshua was almost killed when he ran out into the road from behind a parked van in Stanley, County Durham, and was hit by a car.

Now, he is using his experience to warn other youngsters about the importance of taking extra care when crossing the road.

Together with video footage of the accident, which is being broadcast on our website, we hope Joshua's plea helps families across the North-East to enjoy a safe festive season.
