Logistics company's move strengthens port campaign
A LOGISTICS company has set up a base at Teesport after being impressed by the arguments for the campaign to create a £300m deep sea container terminal.
Hanbury Davies Limited is to open a distribution and logistics depot at PD Ports' Teesport Commerce Park, in Middlesbrough.
The Felixstowe-based firm, which also operates from 18 other places across the UK, has leased its premises from North-East logistics firm Global Transport Logistics (GTL), and said it was looking for a permanent base at the site.
Hanbury Davies said it had decided to set up at Teesport on the back of plans to create the Northern Gateway terminal.
Proposals for the terminal, which would create up to 5,500 jobs to the region and would allow direct imports from the Far East, have been submitted by Teesport owner PD and have passed the first stage of planning consent.
The plans are supported by The Northern Echo.
PD yesterday hailed Hanbury Davies' decision to set up at Teesport as further endorsement for the campaign.
Graham Wall, PD's commercial director, said: "We are delighted that Hanbury Davies has chosen Teesport Commerce Park.
"This adds further weight and support to our argument for using a Northern port to serve Northern consumers.
"It will prove invaluable in helping us promote our new facilities and services to the market place."
Ian Morton, senior general manager at the new depot, said: "PD Ports' huge proposed expansion project at Teesport is very exciting for the shipping line and container transport industries.
"We are all aware of the increased volumes of containers arriving into the UK from Europe, Scandinavia and the Far East, which has put tremendous strain on our ports.
"If, and when, PD Ports' plans are given the go-ahead, this will give the shipping lines greater access into the UK and transport companies an ideal base from which they can more economically service the North of England and Scotland.
