Safety Net, Keeping Kids Safe Online

Ashleigh Hall
      Ashleigh Hall

Following the tragic death of Darlington girl Ashleigh Hall, killed after she met a man over the Internet, The Northern Echo has launched a campaign to help keep our kids safe when they are on-line.
We are working in conjunction with Darlington Council to draw up new tips and lessons in how to avoid trouble using the Internet.
Eventually we hope the lessons will become a part of the National Curriculum. We believe every child should be taught how to stay safe when they are using social networking sites and how to tackle cyber-bullying.
Ashleigh's tragic case exposed the problems - we owe it to her memory to make certain such a thing never happens again.

Safety Net: Top Tips

• Don't agree to meet someone you have only been in touch with online. Only do so with your parents' present.
• Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information - such as a name, address, email addreess, passwords, phone number or photos - either to people you are chatting to or by posting it online where other people can see it.
• Don't accept e-mails, Instant Messenger (IM) messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don't know or trust. They may contain viruses or nasty messages!
• Information you find on the internet may not be true, or someone online may be lying about who they are.
• Tell your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.
