Residents take protest to Parliament

CAMPAIGNERS have sent a
3,000-name petition to Parliament
in a bid to prevent their local post
office from closing.
Residents of Oxbridge, in
Stockton, have rallied together to
persuade the Government to keep
open the post office at Oxbridge
Mini Market.
Carol Chaney and Olive Kay,
members of Oxbridge Residents
Association, accompanied Stockton
Labour Councillor Roy Rix to
London on Thursday, where they
presented Stockton South MP
Dari Taylor with the petition.
She will hand it to the Department
for Business, Enterprise
and Regulatory Reform (DBERR)
to ensure their voices are heard.
Dorothy Riddle, of Oxbridge
Lane, said: "We have been told to
use the post office on the Grange
Estate, but there is no bus there
from here, so people will have to
go into town, instead."
Coun Rix described the response
as tremendous, adding: "I
think Government is listening
and I think those that make the
most noise are likely to be most
successful."
But Conservative Parliamentary
Candidate for Stockton
South, James Wharton, said:
"Labour MPs backed the plans
nationally, but some are now trying
to be seen to be defending the
very offices they are ordering
closed.
"Local residents can see
through this hypocrisy and the
success of the Oxbridge residents
in collecting signatures just highlights
the strength of feeling."
A spokesman for the DBERR
said four million fewer people
were using post offices each week
than two years ago.
She added: "From the outset,
Post Office Ltd has made clear
that the process was about how,
not whether, the changes should
be implemented."
