A GOLF club is launching a year-long fundraising quest for Paralympic hopeful Lyndon Longhorne.

The 14-year-old, from Crook, County Durham, lost both legs and part of an arm to meningitis as a child, but dreams of swimming for his country at London in 2012.

Crook Golf Club captain David Wright has picked the Limbs for Lyndon appeal as the club’s chosen charity for the year.

He said: “He is an inspiration to those who meet him.

“With what he has achieved so far in his life and with him being a Crook lad, we wanted to give people in Crook a chance to help him fulfil his dream.

“It would be a major achievement for anyone.

“We are fully aware that all athletes need sponsorship for things such as coaching and expenses, and Lyndon will be no different.

“He is a genuinely lovely lad and he deserves our support after what he has gone through.”

A charity tournament and fundraising event on Saturday, May 1, will be the first of many, with items being auctioned to raise money.

Lyndon’s mother, Tammy Shevels, thanked the golf club for its help.

She said: “We are absolutely over the moon.

“It is brilliant for them to approach us and offer help because I did not realise what an expensive sport swimming can be and you do not like to ask for help.

“This is wonderful.”

Tickets for the fundraiser are £4, available by calling 01388-762429 or Mr Wright on 0796-084-8385.
