Company gives tips on home security

A WATER company is urging customers to be vigilant over bogus-caller crime.

Thieves who say they are from Northumbrian Water are known to operate in the company's supply area.

A spokesman for the company said: "It very unlikely that Northumbrian Water will need to get into a customer's home without arranging it with the customer first.

"Residents are advised to look for the blue and green Northumbrian Water logo on vehicles and clothing and examine the caller's identity card closely. All Northumbrian Water employees carry an identity card.

"Door chains should be used while checking the caller's identity or speak to them through a locked door.

"Accept the identity card through the letterbox.

"A genuine Northumbrian Water caller will not mind waiting while these checks are carried out."

The identity of any employee can be confirmed by calling the company on 0845-717-1100.

Customers can also register a password by calling the firm or at www.nwl.co.uk

A company employee will need to know the password to request access to the house.

In 2003, The Northern Echo launched its Doorstoppers campaign to stamp out the menace of bogus callers. The Government has promised new powers to make it harder for conmen to trick householders.
