Call for airgun ban after cat targeted
 |
| WEAPONS CALL: Michael Veal with his cat,Minnie |
A DISTRAUGHT pet owner
whose cat had its leg amputated
after it was shot with an air rifle
says the weapons should be
banned.
Retired solicitor Michael Veal,
who found his three-year-old cat,
Minnie, soaked in blood following
the incident last week, has offered
a cash reward for information
leading to a prosecution.
Mr Veal, of Gillamoor, North
Yorkshire, discovered Minnie injured
in his garden on Monday
morning.
A visit to the vet revealed an
air-rifle pellet lodged in her ribs,
which had travelled through her
body, damaging her leg and neck.
Minnie, who was rescued after
she was dumped and left to die on
a roundabout as a kitten, is recovering
after the operation.
Mr Veal said: "I knew there was
something wrong when she did
not turn up for breakfast that
morning. I looked everywhere for
her, and when I came back, she
was in the garden covered in
blood. Minnie had a wretched
start to life, and now she has to
hobble around on three legs. I
cannot understand why air rifles
are still legal - they are terrible
weapons and should be banned."
Anyone with any information
about the incident is asked to call
police on 0845-60-60-247.
Leanne Goacher, of the
RSPCA, said: "Sadly, incidents
like this are not rare. Last year
alone, we received 76 calls regarding
injured cats targeted by
people misusing airguns. In
many cases, the injured animal
simply crawls away and dies."
To report animal cruelty, call
0300-123-4999.
