THE Northern Echo has joined forces with the RSPCA and police in the fight to rid the region of its appalling reputation for animal cruelty. Our Animal Watch campaign urges readers to be on the lookout for any cases of animal cruelty, whether against wild animals, live stock or pets, and to report their suspicions.

TWO men and a teenager accused of causing a cockerel fight will be tried by magistrates.
James Sheldon Welch, of Yarm Road, and Walter David Welch, of Honeypot Lane, and a 17-year-old male, all from Darlington, face four joint charges.
It is alleged they were present at an animal fight and caused it to take place on Tuesday, March 11 last year in Bishop Auckland. They are also accused of two counts of causing two cockerels unnecessary suffering by causing a fight which resulted in injuries, and by removing their wattle and comb and sharpening spurs before the fight.
Walter David Welsh and James Sheldon Welsh face a separate charge of possessing a set of cockfighting spurs designed for an animal fight with the intention of using them.
