Born and brought up in the Newcastle area I have worked for newspapers in Chester, Northampton and Leicester - as well as stints on a London public relations company and a national magazine for family doctors - before joining The Northern Echo in 1998. I have written about health for nearly 20 years and am currently the North-East health writer of the year.
