NEWCASTLE United legend Alan Shearer has announced details of a star-studded charity night on what would be Sir Bobby Robson's 80th birthday.

Guitarist Mark Knopfler, The X Factor winner Joe McElderry and the Northern Sinfonia will perform at the event on February 18 in aid of both Sir Bobby's cancer fighting charity, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and the Alan Shearer Foundation which helps disabled people.

It will take place in the 1,600-seat auditorium at The Sage Gateshead, and previously unseen interviews with Sir Bobby in his finals months will be shown.

Music on the night includes Sir Bobby's picks for radio show Desert Island Discs.

McElderry will sing Nessun Dorma, the piece forever associated with the 1990 World Cup when England, managed by Sir Bobby, came within the width of a post of a place in the final.

Sir Bobby started to plan the event while he was battling his fifth bout of cancer, having already set up his foundation. It was cancelled, however, as his health failed and he died aged 76 in July 2009.

Shearer, who played under Sir Bobby at Newcastle United, said: "He started overseeing this while he was still with us. We know how much it meant to him and we were determined to make it happen for him.

"It should be a great evening and we want people to enjoy it."
