FLOODING continues to affect many roads in North Yorkshire. Many minor routes are closed, others are only passable with extreme care. River levels are being continuously monitored.

Selby

  • A659 River Bridge in Tadcaster: closed to pedestrians and vehicles in both directions. The bridge will remain closed until the water subsides enough to allow engineers access to inspect the bridge;
  • Intake Lane at Beal: closed;
  • Sir John Lane in Sherburn in Elmet: road flooded but is passable with care;
  • Ramparts in Bolton Percy: closed;
  • Bridge Street in Tadcaster: closed;
  • Commercial Street in Tadcaster: closed;
  • A659 Tadcaster to Newton Kyme: flooded but passable with care;
  • Mill Lane in Stutton: closed;
  • B1223 Kirby Wharf to Church Fenton: closed;
  • Newton Lane, Fairburn Ings: closed;
  • C289 Bolton Percy cricket field to Horington Bridge: closed;
  • Cawood Bridge: closed;
  • C310 Kelfield to Cawood: closed;
  • Marsh Lane, Cawood is closed.

Hambleton

  • A19 northbound entry slip from the A170 is closed due to an incident. Road expected to re-open from 4.pm;
  • Morton on Swale bridge: closed;

  • Kirby Wiske: closed;
  • Linton Road bridge, Newton on Ouse: closed;
  • C87 Thornton bridge, Helperby: closed;

  • C159 from Thrintoft Village to Great Langton to the junction with the U2186 Carriage Drive;

Why are we, as a nation, so unprepared for any extreme of weather even when it occurrs with some frequency, everything is reactive not proactive, there is no preemptive works carried out. The councils/water authorities decided decades ago to stop clearing drains.

It's funny; I remember an interview with the CEO of Gatwick (From Bishop BTW). He was asked why the Airport had bought snow clearing equipment for the runway when we don't get heavy snow falls in the UK. He replied, "What like the heavy snow fall last year and now this year?"
