A MAN circumnavigating the UK coastline by foot and bicycle arrived in the region last the weekend.

Ettienne de Beer visited Teesside and took a trip on Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge as part of a 50-day journey that will see him travel 4,175 miles around the UK.

The 32-year-old, from South London, is raising money for The Haven, a breast cancer charity that supported his wife, Patricia, during her fight against the disease.

The charity provides a wide range of therapies which help people deal with the physical and emotional side effects of breast cancer.

It costs The Haven £1,000 to offer one woman ten sessions.

Mr de Beer has pledged to raise £100,000.

He said: "The difference The Haven made to Patricia was phenomenal and really beneficial and I want to get their name out there."

Personal trainer Mr de Beer is alternating between running and cycling, covering up to 120 miles a day on his bike and up to 70 miles on the days he is running. His wife is following his route in a campervan, offering support along the way.
