ALTHOUGH official figures have shown a fall in UK unemployment of 51,000 in the three months to April 2012, this will not be a comfort for people in the North-East.
Our area has sadly bucked the national trend and unemployment has risen by 8,000 in the last quarter (Echo, June 19).
Our claimant count rate is also the highest in the country.
It seems as if the Tories are continuing their favourite hobbyhorse, which is the neglect of the North-East. The Government’s lack of a strategy for growth is biting hard.
Our region has always seemed to suffer the most when the UK economy is in recession or stalling.
Surely, on the point of fairness, we need a regionally-elected assembly to fight our corner in order to secure the necessary jobs and funding from Westminster?
