SERIAL correspondent Robert Meggs seems to be the one thing we don’t need – yet another evangelical socialist.

I can recall skimming through Jim Tague’s number-crunching of direct taxation (HAS, May 8).

It was apparent that a surprisingly small number of wealthy persons are presently paying almost half of the entire income tax take.

Subsequently, I have pored over Mr Megg’s carpet-trudging parable of response (HAS, May 10), and I am still not entirely sure of what point he is trying to make.

In claiming to explain the ideas of a certain Dutch economist, Mr Meggs has somehow become a double Dutch economist.

By interpolating Mr Meggs’ usual themes, I am guessing he would like to see a more equal share out of the world’s goodies.

So would I.

It would surely reduce the number of illegal immigrants who arrive here daily.

But regrettably, the entire human race seems to have little appetite for altruism.

George Orwell’s book Animal Farm (originally alluding to an ultra-socialist Russia) illustrates the usual result of pursuing equality.
