A REVELLER walking home in the early hours was robbed of his wallet and mobile phone and warned: "If you tell anyone I'll kill you."

Joanne Haggerty, 28, and Glenn Williams, 36, followed their victim along streets near Middlesbrough town centre before striking at 4.30am.

Teesside Crown Court heard yesterday how Williams told the terrified youngman: "Come down here - we want a couple of quid off you."

Haggarty snatched a mobile phone from the victim's jeans pocket, grabbed his jacket as he tried to flee and took his wallet, said Sue Jacobs, prosecuting.

Miss Jacobs told Judge Peter Armstrong that it was as the victim ran away that Haggerty shouted to him: "Tell anyone and I'll kill you."

The thieving pair later sent a textmessage from the phone to the victim'smother, saying: "Mam, forgot Pin number.

Need it to get home."

Miss Jacobs said they hoped to get the number for a cash card from the wallet so they could withdrawmoney from a hole-in-the-wall machine.

Williams and Haggerty were arrested after police looked at close circuit television footage showing them following the man in Grange Road.

Haggerty admitted robbery when she appeared in court last December, but Williams denied it, stood trial last month and was convicted by a jury.

The court heard yesterday that the victim's depression was made worse by the November 18 attack, and he believes it will continue to affect on him.

Haggerty, of Letitia Street, Middlesbrough, was jailed for eight months.

Her husband is now off drugs and will be able to support her when she is released.

Williams, of Pearl Street, Middlesbrough, received 12 months. His lawyer said he turned to alcohol after kicking a heroin habit but slipped back into drugs.

RobertMochrie, mitigating, said Williams had made no physical contact with the victim and stepped back while Haggerty searched his clothing.

Judge Armstrong told the pair: "This was a joint offence and each of you played a role in it. Each defendant has to take responsibility for what was the total effect."
