Search continues for boy along Wear at Sunnybrow, near Willington

The Northern Echo: The search continues this morning along the river bank at Sunnybrow, Willington The search continues this morning along the river bank at Sunnybrow, Willington

The search is continuing this morning for an eight-year-old boy who was last night swept into the River Wear in County Durham.

A huge air and land search began last night (Friday) at Sunnybrow, near Willington, involving the police helicopter, the Great North Air Ambulance, police officers and members of the Teesdale Search and Rescue team.

Speaking last night, a Durham Police spokesman said: “The boy, who was playing with friends in the area of the Brown Trout Pub, which is in close proximity to the river, is believed to have fallen from the embankment into the water at approximately 7pm.

“An extensive search of the river is currently in progress with assistance from the fire brigade. Teesdale Search and Rescue are also providing assistance, along with the police North-East air support unit.”

Officers were also seen scanning the river near to the village of Croxdale.

A villager there said the River Wear had been running fast due to the recent heavy rains.

Describing the incident as a tragedy, he said: “The river is in a very distressed state at the moment and is quite swollen.”

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle attended the search.

A spokeswoman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said the fire service had last night left the area, but the RAF and the mountain rescue team would continue the search throughout the night.

The spokeswoman said: "At 1927 hours, we received a call to Prospect Place, at Sunnybrow, Crook. This was one eight-year-old boy, from Sunnybrow, believed to have been in the river.

"A multi-agency approach was co-ordinated by the fire service, involving fire, police, ambulance, Teesdale and Weardale Search and Rescue and the RAF, who have attempted to locate the boy.

"The RAF and mountain rescue team are continuing the search during the evening hours."

When will parents learn to keep children away from the river. This happens every year. Very sad.
I think you should keep your opinions to yourself. His parents will be going through hell. You don't know why he was there so can't comment about his parents. It's tragic n has effected a lot of people.Have a heart and show a little compassion. We're all praying he is found soon and I hope his parents are getting the support they need at this sad time.Shame on you Angus 7 for that inappropriate comment.
My heart and thoughts go to his parents right now.

niki_s when u said 'such a waste of a young life' were u confirming the worst?.
Fingers crossed for the lil boys safety and that he is returned home, his family must be going through hell, anything happening to a child is a parents nightmare, as a parent of a lil girl i had a tear when i read this, there is a lil boy missing yet some low life shows no sympathy. I know someone having their say is someones opinion but surely the echo could remove those comments that upset people.

Instead of focusing on blame etc, angus you should focus on the boy being found safe.
No matter how many dangers there are to kids, and no how many warnings parents give to kids, kids wil be kids,so can not always blame the parents.
Lets hope the boy is found safe asap, thoughts are with the family.

I was up most the night awaiting news.I have a 6 year old and it would destroy me if it was her in that situation.Kids don't see the danger of things and often think they are invincible.People can be very thoughtless some times.Such a horrific thing for any parent to go through.I'm hoping they find him soon,I can not imagine what his family are going through right now.I am pleased they are getting the support they need paul1987.

my boys are all grown up now but they tell me they did the same thing when they were kids we as parents can not keep them wrapped in cotton wool we do have to trust them sometime
and comments about parents are shocking when his family will be blaming themselves there is no need to add to their distress it was just a freak accident
I do hope to God that he is found just washed down the river waiting to be rescued we heard all the services near our home working all night and couldn't sleep thinking of this little boys family I don't know what they are going through but my thoughts and best wishes go out to them
