STUDENTS will be taking part in a driving-themed roadshow next week aimed at helping them to improve their driving skills.

It is hoped it will encourage them to take part in Durham County Council’s young driver training programme, EXCELerate.

From Monday until Friday students at Bishop Auckland College will be given presentations from the council’s road safety team and firefighters, as well as the opportunity to test their driving skills on a driving simulator.

Alan Kennedy, road safety section manager at Durham County Council, said: “There are more young drivers involved in serious and fatal crashes in County Durham than in any other age group. We are really keen on encouraging students to join our EXCELerate programme to help keep them safer on the roads.”

The programme, aimed at people aged 15 to 25 aims to improve driving standards and develop safer drivers.
