I AM pleased to read that Bill Dixon, the leader of Darlington Borough Council, is looking for a decision to be made on the provision of Gypsy sites in the town (Echo, Apr 24).
Let’s hope the decision is made sooner rather than later so we can avoid further problems from travellers who complain about the lack of sites and then move onto their own land, setting up camp unlawfully, often on greenfield sites where planning permission would not be granted to anyone else.
This causes resentment from the settled community and time and money to the council in its attempts at enforcement. I would certainly support the view that we should look at making extra spaces at existing sites – the sooner the better.
Councillor Brian Jones,
