Fracas deals boxing event a knockout blow

POLICE INVESTIGATION: People congregate outside Tindale Crescent Workingmen's Club following the disturbance POLICE INVESTIGATION: People congregate outside Tindale Crescent Workingmen's Club following the disturbance

A COMMUNITY boxing club has insisted it had nothing to do with a disturbance which brought one of its events to a premature end.

More than a dozen police vehicles responded to an incident at Tindale Crescent Workingmen’s Club, near Bishop Auckland, on Saturday afternoon, where Bishop Auckland Boxing Club was holding a tournament for its young members.

A fracas is thought have broken out after some unidentified people entered the building.

The incident spilled out onto the street.

The disturbance is believed to have lasted only a few minutes, but boxing club organisers decided to cancel the tournament after only the second bout to ensure the safety of its members. No one was thought to have been injured, but many of the younger club members were left distressed by the incident.

The tournament was taking place to celebrate a recent £10,000 grant given to the club by local councillors to fund new washroom facilities for its growing number of female members and to replace old equipment.

The popular club has dozens of members aged 11 and above and its headquarters are based at Murphy Crescent, on the Woodhouse Close Estate, in Bishop Auckland.

A club spokesman said: “This incident was nothing to do with Bishop Auckland Boxing Club, its members or their families. It has spoilt a show which we had worked so hard for and had been organising for months.

“It was heartbreaking taking the ring down so early and half of the kids were in tears – they have spent months training for this. This will affect us financially as well because we have spent money on things like raffle prizes.”

Police said there did not appear to be any link between the boxing club and the trouble, but their inquiries were continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.

i was at boxing show and it is correct it had nothing to do with bishop abc.but the trouble did start inside the club by people who are not bothered or support the club.if they are any cctv cameras in the club it would prove this.all the hard work of boxers, coaches, famil
y and friends were wasted as it was only on for 10 mins before trouble started.hundreds of people who paid in and bought raffle tickets for this event also lost out as club was unable to refund.this was a very sad day for boxing and i hope the boxing club recovers from this and the young boxers have not been affected by the scum who caused all the trouble who do not represent bishop auckland or the boxing community.

The unspoken question that needs to be answered is "Do our towns and region need or want a boxing club, and shouldn't it be closed down and run out of town! If this was a dog kennel that trains Rottweiler dogs to fight each other it would be promptly closed, yet we allow this so called sport for savages to persist? Boxing was never a noble sport, it was always seedy, crooked and a disgrace to the human race. Each year it had it's deaths, its brain injury victims and it deadbeat managers and boxers who wasted the money they earned on drugs and riotous living. Those who don't make the grade often become doormen / bouncers, or the local pseudo tough guy who invariably ends up before the Courts as a troublemaker. Ex-boxers form poor marriage partners, have children who avoid their own fathers and his bad temper and who do not flourish in school because of the problems they have at home.

Its a disgrace that a club that allows boxing on it's premises should be given any public funding or grants at all. I say ban boxing, ban it as an Olympic Sport and keep it's wicked influence well away from our children. If you think differently then let me remind you about, Mike Tyson, Ali, Joe Louis, Rocky Graziano, Jimmy Lynch, Freddie Mills, and more often than not your local wannabe who ends up cadging tabs on corners. Ban it! and keep it off our TV.

@EliasW: You don't know what you're talking about and you're just firing off reactionary, ill-informed opinions without the backing of direct experience.
Most boxing clubs are well run, well disciplined places that give local youths a focus and purpose that is often missing from their lives. Anyone can list a few bad examples from any profession and boxing has no more of those than say football or even the clergy with their paedophiles and child abusers. Shall we ban those?
I was there on Saturday and innocent people were hurt, glassed and bruised and I hope the police give the incident the attention it deserves. That lad could have been killed (Ms Russell, why not talk to witnesses instead of writing "No one was thought to have been injured"? I saw bloodied faces and took one old man home with a sprained knee). It had nothing to do with the club or boxing and those dozen or so travellers that attacked didn't care who they hurt, man or child. Focus on them, not boxing.

Reply:

No one is interested in how well boxing clubs are run, whats important is the mental change that occurs when a young person becomes involved with boxing and he rapidly alters from being a nice boy into a swaggering little toughie who wants to hit someone in order to practice what he was taught in the boxing ring.

After a young boy has spent just 2 hours in a boxing club the damage is done. If he spend a year there he's irrecoverable and on the fringes of society. Todays Youth want trades, apprenticeships, work skills, ideas + ambition and people knowledge, not to be misled into a hobby which can destroy their lives just as surely as class 1 drugs. In the USA boxing venues are closing, TV companies will only transmit the heavyweight bouts, and the once notorious black kids from the ghetto becoming boxers are disappearing due to USA Black emancipation and the millions of well paid jobs available to Black African Americans. Call it the Dr Martin Luther King Legacy. Boxing in the USA is now an Hispanic sport. The people who attended this boxing shows in Bishop would also attend dog fights, and understanding the link solves what I'm getting at and suggests boxing needs to be banned.
